Enjoy a Healthy and Happy Fourth of July

July 4th is a day many of us look forward to all summer long. It's a holiday filled with family gatherings, backyard BBQs, pool parties, fireworks, and plenty of delicious food. Traditional celebrations often include hamburgers, hot dogs, pasta salads, chips, desserts, and festive drinks.

At Well by Messer, we want you to enjoy every part of the holiday while also making choices that help you feel your best. A little planning can go a long way toward balancing celebrations with healthy habits.

Don't Save Up Your Calories

One of the best things you can do before heading to a BBQ or party is to eat normally throughout the day. Many people skip breakfast or lunch, thinking they'll "save room" for the celebration. Unfortunately, arriving overly hungry often leads to overeating.

Instead, stick to your regular meal schedule and include protein, fiber, healthy fats, and complex carbohydrates at each meal. When you arrive comfortably satisfied, not starving, you'll be able to enjoy your favorite foods mindfully while focusing on spending time with family and friends.

Stay Hydrated

Summer heat and outdoor activities make hydration especially important.

  • Start your day with water and drink it throughout the day

  • If you choose to drink alcohol, alternate each alcoholic beverage with a glass of water.

  • Be mindful of sugary drinks such as soda, sweet tea, lemonade, and cocktails, which can quickly add extra calories and sugar without keeping you satisfied.

Build a Balanced Plate

Before filling your plate, take a moment to look at all of the food options. Choose the foods you truly enjoy while also making room for nutritious choices.

Try using the Plate Method:

  • Β½ plate:  vegetables like grilled veggies, salads, cruditΓ©

  • ΒΌ plate: Lean protein such as grilled chicken, turkey burgers, shrimp, fish, or lean beef

  • ΒΌ plate: Carbohydrate-rich foods like corn on the cob, potato salad, pasta salad, baked beans, or chips

This simple approach naturally supports portion control while still leaving room for your holiday favorites.

Bring Something Healthy to Share

Offering a nutritious dish is a great way to ensure there's a healthy option available for everyone.

Ideas include:

  • Colorful summer salad

  • Grilled vegetables

  • Fresh fruit platter

  • Three-bean salad

  • Greek yogurt ranch dip with fresh vegetables

  • Watermelon, feta, and mint salad

You may even inspire others to add healthier choices to their plates.

Enjoy Your Favorite Treats Mindfully

Healthy eating isn't about perfection. Holidays are meant to be enjoyed.

Give yourself permission to savor the foods you love. Eat slowly, enjoy each bite, and appreciate those special holiday favorites that only come around once or twice a year. Mindful eating often leaves you feeling more satisfied and less likely to overeat.

If You Overindulge...

One meal does not undo your healthy lifestyle.

If you eat more than you planned, simply return to your normal eating and exercise routine at your next meal. There's no need to "make up for it" by skipping meals or restricting food the next day.

Remember, it's what you do most of the time, not one holiday, that has the greatest impact on your health.

From all of us at Well by Messer, we wish you and your family a safe, healthy, and happy Fourth of July. Enjoy the celebrations, nourish your body, and create wonderful memories with the people you love.
