Could GLP-1 Medications Help Reduce Cancer Risk?
When GLP-1 medications first became available, much of the excitement centered around their ability to promote significant weight loss and improve metabolic health. These drugs offered a powerful new option for my patients struggling with obesity, diabetes and related conditions.
At the same time, we were concerned about potential long-term risks and links to certain cancers, specifically pancreatic and thyroid. We even considered doing thyroid ultrasounds on all patients before starting treatment!
Fortunately, years of clinical research have not confirmed these fears. New evidence suggests that the opposite may be trueβthat GLP1 medications may actually help reduce the risk of some cancers and improve outcomes in patients with cancer.
Among the findings:
A study of more than 100,000 women found a 30% lower incidence of breast cancer among those taking GLP-1 medications compared with those who were not.
A separate study of 27,000 women with breast cancer found a 30% lower risk of death from breast cancer among GLP-1 users.
Another study involving more than 12,000 patients with lung, breast, colorectal, and liver cancers found up to a 50% reduction in the risk of cancer spread.
Because excess weight is a known risk factor for many cancers, some of these benefits may be related to weight loss itself. Researchers also believe the anti-inflammatory effects of GLP-1 medications may play an important role in slowing tumor growth and progression.
While these findings are exciting, they do not prove that GLP-1 medications prevent or treat cancer, and more research is needed to better understand this relationship. Stay tunedβthis is an area of medicine that continues to evolve rapidly!
