What Are Musculoskeletal Disorders?
Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) are conditions that affect the bones, joints, muscles, ligaments, tendons, and other connective tissues, leading to pain, stiffness, swelling, or decreased mobility. These disorders can result from aging, injury, overuse, or autoimmune diseases.
Commonly treated conditions include osteoarthritis, characterized by cartilage degeneration; rheumatoid arthritis, an autoimmune disease causing joint inflammation; gout, a metabolic condition involving uric acid crystal buildup in joints; and osteoporosis, which weakens bones and increases fracture risk.
What Are the Causes of Musculoskeletal Disorders?
Musculoskeletal disorders are caused by a combination of risk factors, including:
Work-related: Repetitive or forceful movements, awkward postures, heavy lifting, or prolonged sitting or standing
Injuries: Falls, vehicle accidents, broken bones, sprains, or dislocations
Diseases: Arthritis, lupus, or gout
Aging: Tissue damage over time
Other conditions: Herniated spinal discs, infections, or inflammation
Inherited conditions: Some MSDs can be inherited
What Are the Treatments and Therapies for Musculoskeletal Disorders?
Pain management includes NSAIDs, physical therapy, weight loss programs, and supplementation with calcium and vitamin D. Rheumatoid arthritis requires DMARDs or biologic agents, often in collaboration with a rheumatologist.
How Can Well by Messer Help You with Musculoskeletal Disorders?
Well by Messer can send for X-rays or MRIs for joint assessment and bone density testing (DEXA scans). We can order blood tests for inflammatory markers (e.g., ESR, CRP, rheumatoid factor, antiCCP antibodies). We often refer to a rheumatologist for treatment.
At Well by Messer, our physicians, dietitians and personal training partners work together to treat patients with musculoskeletal disorders. Although medications can be effective, many of the symptoms can also be treated with lifestyle modification and so we encourage our patients to work closely with our dietitians and personal training partners.
