What Is Eyelash Hair Transplantation?
Eyelash hair transplantation restores lashes by placing individual hair follicles directly into the eyelid margin. It is the most delicate procedure in hair restoration, performed millimeters from the surface of the eye, and it requires a level of precision and candidate selection that sets it apart from every other transplant. Fine single-hair follicular units are harvested from the scalp, most often from where hair is finest, and placed one at a time along the lash line at a specific angle and curve. Approximately twenty-five to fifty grafts are placed per upper eyelid, and the lower lid is treated only rarely. The procedure is performed under local anesthesia with a corneal protective shield in place throughout.
Who Is a Candidate for Eyelash Hair Transplantation?
Eyelash transplantation is a reconstructive procedure first and a cosmetic one second, and we are deliberately selective about who should have it because the eye is involved. Appropriate candidates typically include those with lash loss from trauma, laceration, or burn injury; scarring of the lid margin following a chalazion, surgery, or infection; permanent loss following chemotherapy or radiation; long-standing trichotillomania (compulsive hair pulling) once pulling has reliably stopped; lash loss from previous extension use or adhesive injury; and inflammatory conditions such as Stevens Johnson syndrome that have been fully treated and are dormant. Two considerations are essential. First, transplanted lashes are scalp hair and behave accordingly: they grow long and must be trimmed every two to three weeks and periodically curled to match the natural lash line, permanently. Second, for patients whose lashes are simply thin rather than absent, we generally recommend starting with prescription and non-prescription lash-growth medication or serums before considering eyelash transplant surgery.
