What Is Eyebrow Hair Transplantation?
Eyebrow hair transplantation restores brow density and shape by moving individual hair follicles from the scalp to the brow. Because eyebrow hairs lie almost flat against the skin with a specific direction pattern, this procedure requires the most technical precision in hair restoration. Donor hair is taken from a carefully selected region of the scalp, where hair caliber most closely matches brow hair. Grafts are dissected into single follicular units and each one is placed individually at an extremely acute angle, nearly parallel to the skin, so the hair lies flat rather than standing away from the face. Direction changes across the brow and the transplant must follow it precisely: hairs at the inner head grow upward and slightly outward, sweep laterally through the body, and angle downward along the tail, with an interlocking transition where the upper and lower rows meet. Most brows require roughly one hundred fifty to four hundred grafts per side depending on how much native hair remains.
Who Is a Candidate for Eyebrow Hair Transplantation?
Eyebrow transplantation is appropriate for a wide range of patients, including those with thinning from years of over-plucking, waxing, or threading; eyebrow loss from trauma, burns, or surgical scars; trichotillomania (compulsive hair pulling), once the pulling behavior has been stable for a sustained period; permanent brow loss following chemotherapy or radiation; naturally sparse brows; and dissatisfaction with microblading or a desire for a permanent alternative. One point deserves emphasis before surgery: transplanted brow hairs retain the growth characteristics of scalp hair. They grow longer and faster than native brow hair and require trimming roughly every one to two weeks for life. Most patients find this a reasonable trade, but it should be a decision made with full consideration. In cases where an inflammatory or autoimmune condition caused the loss, it must be confirmed quiescent before transplantation, since active disease will attack transplanted follicles as readily as native ones.
