Why Did You Become a Doctor?

I grew up in a modest family in Queens, where even attending college felt like a privilege. A close friend who aspired to become a lab technologist encouraged me to apply to the School of Allied Health Sciences at Hunter College to study physical therapy. Every day I commuted by bus and three trains to Hunter, and those trips into Manhattan opened my eyes to a much larger world. While taking an anatomy class shared with students at Mount Sinai School of Medicine, I realized I wanted to pursue medicine instead of physical therapy.

At the same time, I had married a physician who encouraged me to follow that dream. I went on to complete my pre-medical requirements at Columbia and then attended NYU School of Medicine. It was there that I discovered just how limitless the possibilities wereβ€”and I fully committed to becoming a physician.

What Made You Focus on Gynecology?

I have always believed deeply in women’s healthβ€”both in providing excellent care and in empowering women to have a voice in their own health decisions.

What Is Your Approach to Medicine?

For me, medicine is never about the doctorβ€”it’s about the patient. Each patient has her own story, and my role is to listen carefully and respond with compassion and expertise.

How Would You Define Patient Care?

Patient care must be individualized. It’s about seeing the patient as a whole person and tailoring care to her specific needs and circumstances.

Do You Do Any Philanthropic Work?

I have worked in Africa with an NGO providing care for women with abnormal Pap smears and HPV. In addition, I host a bi-weekly radio show dedicated to educating and empowering the public with accurate women’s health information.
