Why Did You Become a Doctor?
Growing up in a traditional family in the 1970’s and 80’s, it was strange for a young girl to consider a career in medicine. I tried to convince myself to pursue pretty much every other profession that would be easier than going to medical school, but at the end of college I realized I wouldn’t be happy doing anything else. Then after fourteen years and four young children, I retired to take care of my growing family. During that time, I became a nutritional health coach and helped private clients live their healthiest lives. My love for medicine and helping patients navigate their own health and wellness has always been a driving force for me and now I find myself coming out of retirement to continue this journey.
What Made You Focus on Obstetrics and Gynecology?
Ob/Gyn was the most natural fit for me. The field is the perfect combination of primary care and surgery. It has allowed me to establish deep, long-lasting relationships with patients as we traverse the good and bad times of health and illness. The ten years I delivered babies, (too many to count!) was such a highlight for me. I love that I am not restricted to any age group in gynecology, and I am as excited to see teenagers for their first gynecologic exam as I am to help women navigate their menopause and post-menopausal years. Women’s health care is just a passion for me.
What Is Your Approach to Medicine?
Sit down, ask a lot of questions, and listen to patients. I do not conduct office visits with my hand on the doorknob, hurried to get to the next patient. When patients can tell their story, when they have your full attention, the answers will reveal themselves. People deserve to be able to get in touch with their doctors to explain test results, be seen in a timely manner, and to be a part of their treatment plan. This connection is good for patients and also good for doctors. Additionally, I believe that if we take our time in the office, we can shift the focus of healthcare from the disease model to one of healthy lifestyle, preventative care, and wellness.
Do You Do Any Philanthropic Work?
I have supported several nonprofits over the years including Cycle for Survival, St. Jude’s Children Hospital, Big Brother Big Sisters, a local food bank, and several veterans organizations. I serve on the Board of Trustees of my synagogue and support various Israeli non-profits as well.
