Why Did You Become a Doctor?
Growing up in a traditional family in the 1970s and 1980s, it was unusual for a young woman to envision a career in medicine. For years, I tried to persuade myself to pursue almost any other profession, i.e. something less demanding than medical school. Yet by the end of college, I recognized a simple truth: I would not be fulfilled by doing anything else. Medicine was not merely an ambition; it was a calling.
After fourteen years in practice and the birth of my four young children, I made the decision to step away from clinical medicine to focus on raising my growing family. During that time, I became a certified nutritional health coach, guiding private clients toward healthier, more balanced lives. Even outside the traditional medical setting, my passion for helping patients navigate their health and well-being never waned. That enduring commitment has now brought me out of retirement, eager to continue the work that has always inspired me.
What Made You Focus on Obstetrics and Gynecology?
Obstetrics and Gynecology felt like the most natural fit from the very beginning. The specialty uniquely blends primary care and surgery, allowing for both continuity and procedural skill. It has given me the privilege of forming deep, long-standing relationships with patients as we move together through life’s most profound moments, which is both joyful and challenging.
The ten years I spent delivering babies remain among the most meaningful of my career. There is nothing quite like participating in the beginning of a new life. At the same time, I value that gynecology is not confined to any single age group. I am equally energized by guiding a teenager through her first gynecologic visit as I am by supporting women through menopause and the postmenopausal years. Women’s health is not simply my specialty; it is my passion.
What Is Your Approach to Medicine?
My approach is simple: sit down, ask thoughtful questions, and truly listen.
I do not conduct office visits with my hand on the doorknob, rushing to the next appointment. When patients are given the time and space to share their stories, and when they feel they have your full attention, the answers often reveal themselves. Listening is not ancillary to good medicine; it is central to it.
Patients deserve timely access to their physicians, clear explanations of their test results, and an active role in their treatment plans. This partnership strengthens outcomes and restores humanity to healthcare. Moreover, when we take the necessary time during visits, we can shift the focus from a purely disease-driven model to one centered on prevention, healthy lifestyle, and long-term wellness.
Do You Do Any Philanthropic Work?
Over the years, I have been proud to support a number of nonprofit organizations, including Cycle for Survival, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Big Brothers Big Sisters, a local food bank, and several veterans’ organizations. I also serve on the Board of Trustees of my synagogue and actively support various Israeli nonprofit initiatives. Giving back to the community has always been an essential extension of my personal and professional values.
