Why Did You Become a Doctor?
As a young girl, I was always creative and looked for ways to solve problems. I saw my father, work so hard with such extraordinary passion and love for his craft as a plastic surgeon — it was almost contagious. Even while volunteering for the community ambulance in high school, I saw surgery to as a path to fix things for people who needed help. In college, I majored in African Studies, which affirmed the importance of global health. I couldn’t wait to complete my training and to begin performing surgeries.
What Made You Focus on Plastic Surgery?
As a plastic and reconstructive surgeon, it is my goal to make each patient look and feel like the best version of themselves. As a wife and mother, I inhabit roles that demand understanding, curiosity, and empathy for the patient experience. It is the most gratifying feeeling to be able to change the way someone feels about themselves; whether reconstructing a patient’s face or breasts after a cancer operation or fixing a cosmetic issue that has bothered them for years, I feel strongly about addressing any and all issues in any feasible manner.
What Is Your Approach to Medicine?
I truly believe in the multi-disciplinary approach to medicine. The most exciting part of this position is to participate in the seamless and holistic care of my patients. The ability to come to one place and have excellent primary care, medical subspecialities such as endocrinology and OBGYN, as well as to seek care from a plastic surgeon is highly unique. I want my patients to feel cared for in their entirety. My aspiration is to deliver care that emphasizes patient well-being and outcomes in the broadest possible context.
Do You Do Any Philanthropic Work?
A large part of the reason for my chosen field of plastic and reconstructive surgery has been the wonderful opportunities to provide healthcare to underserved communities. I have been lucky on multiple occasions to travel internationally to provide that care. As an undergraduate, I lived in Tanzania and taught English and math to female students. In my fourth year of medical school, I lived in Uganda, where I worked in a general medicine clinic providing medical care to the surrounding rural population. After specializing in plastic surgery I have been on two medical missions, one to the Philippines and another to Ecuador, to address children born with congenital cleft lip and palate. I would love to continue to prioritize this kind of work as my career evolves.
