Why Did You Become a Doctor?
For as long as I can remember, I have been fascinated by science and the inner workings of the human body. With a strong desire to meaningfully contribute to society and positively impact the lives of those around me, I naturally found my way to medicine. Medicine is the perfect combination of science and humanism – one minute I may be studying the complex mechanism of action of a cholesterol-lowering medication, and the next minute I may be talking with a patient about diet and exercise. It is incredibly rewarding to be able to use both scientific knowledge and lifestyle counseling to improve the health of my patients.
What Made You Focus on Lipidology?
Living a healthy lifestyle has been fundamental to my own well-being, especially as I navigated the stressful times of physician training. During residency, I cared for countless individuals who were suffering from the complications of end-stage cardiac conditions, despite much of it being preventable. My personal and professional experiences inspired me to find a specialty in which I could help patients prevent these conditions by initiating aggressive cardiovascular risk modifications decades earlier. Through the practice of lipidology and preventive heart care, I am able to use my own passion for prevention to empower patients to improve their heart health. Additionally, lipidology is a burgeoning field with many new and exciting advancements in therapies that will greatly improve the lives of patients. I am honored to have the opportunity to apply these groundbreaking therapies to patient care.
What Is Your Approach to Medicine?
My goal is to make sure all of my patients know that their well-being is a priority to me – that they feel heard, understood, and supported. Before we even meet, I learn as much as I can about you from your chart, delving deeply into your history. During our time together, I try to do much more listening and observing than talking, ascertaining what’s important to you. When discussing a treatment plan, I lay out all the options in detail and give you time to ask questions and tell me what you’re thinking before giving my recommendation. We work together to come to a decision that is based in scientific evidence, but also consistent with your health goals. From there, we fine-tune and adjust the plan as many times as necessary until both of our treatment goals are met. Developing a strong, longitudinal relationship with each of my patients is essential to my practice.
How Would You Define Patient Care?
Patient care is a partnership between patient and physician in which the patient’s perspective is prioritized and care is individualized. Patients should have autonomy in each and every medical decision that is made, with their physician serving as a guide to provide evidence-based recommendations. Treatment decisions are almost never straightforward, and as such, must be tailored to each patient’s unique circumstances, values, and beliefs.
